Cross Pollination
mono type prints
With these flowers, I wanted to create images that are both beautiful and truthful. Confronted by so many man made scenes in everyday city living, sometimes its easy to overlook the the beautiful stuff hanging out on the sides, in the parks or growing up through the cracks in the asphalt. I focused on the beauty and intelligence within the structure of flowers and plants; the math, lines and shapes. Move in close, imagine an insects’s point of view, get lost in another world.
These flower prints were exhibited as part of a collaborative project I worked on with my friend Barbara Birmingham, a photographer I've worked with over the past 20 years. It occurred to us last Spring that we could use the experience and discipline we’ve learned through our commercial work to help motivate and structure us for a creative project of our own. The idea to choose a common subject, work independently in our chosen mediums and get together every so often to share notes, images, thoughts and ideas was formed. After deciding on flowers as our subject, the name "cross pollination" was hatched. We were happy to get a beautiful space to exhibit the work in, as part of the Long Island City "Arts Open" event. Here is what the show looked like:
We are now working on getting Botanical Gardens interested in hanging the show as well.
Below is the postcard from the show.
